The bids kept going higher and higher for the Estevan Bruins annual Jersey Auction fundraiser on Saturday, February 29th, and by midnight a total of $23,400 was raised for the club’s Education Fund.
The Bruins’ Education Fund receives 100% of the proceeds from the Jersey Auction every year, as the fund is set up to support all players who play for the Bruins then pursue post-secondary education after their junior hockey careers are over.
Each player receives $1,000 for every season they are credited playing with the Bruins. This ‘scholarship’ applies to all Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) teams. For example, after this season Bruins’ 4th-year forward Jayden Davis will be eligible to receive $4,000 towards post-secondary education once he is accepted into a recognized school. While Jayden’s fellow graduating teammate Tylor Ludwar, playing in his first year with the Bruins, will receive $1,000 from the Bruins AND similar ‘scholarship’ dollars from his previous junior hockey teams.
This drives home the necessity for outstanding support from the community for the Bruins’ Jersey Auction, as the fund will provide anywhere from $10,000 – $30,000 in scholarships, depending on the number of graduating players who move on to school, every season.
On Saturday night, one of the most successful Jersey Auctions in several years was held as a combination of the 6 Live Auction jerseys and 24 Online Auction jerseys raised $23,400.
The six players who had their Carson Safety Services’ 3rd jersey’s auctioned live, thanks to locally-owned Mack Auction Company, were: Griffin Asham-Moroz ($4,100), Jayden Davis ($3,700), Kade McMillen ($1,250), Isaiah Thomas ($1,250), Keenan Rancier ($1,250) and Austin King-Cunningham ($900). The total raised between the two intermissions alone was $12,450, one of the largest totals for the live auction in recent memory.
The remaining Carson Safety Services 3rd jersey’s were auctioned off online, along with six framed jersey’s of the Bruins’ leadership group: Devan Harrison (A), Jayden Davis (C), Kade McMillen (A), Tanner Manz (A), Tyson Manz (A), and Isaiah Thomas (A). Those 24 jersey’s went for a combined total of $10,950.
