The Estevan Bruins of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) have been announced as the host club of the 2022 Centennial Cup, presented by Tim Horton’s. The Centennial Cup is the National Championship for the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL), and features four champions representing 13 leagues across Canada and one host team in a 10-day tournament held in May each season.
“This is a very proud day for the City of Estevan, for the Estevan Bruins Hockey Club and southeast Saskatchewan,” said Greg Hoffort, co-chair of the bid committee and Councillor of the City of Estevan.
“With City support, our first-class facility and the strong hockey tradition here in Estevan, we are confident in our ability to host one of the best championships to date.”
Co-Chair of the bid committee and President of the Estevan Bruins Hockey Club, Cory Prokop added, “Hosting this national event is a result of all the incredibly successful events this community has hosted over the past number of years as well as the success the Estevan Bruins have attained. The Board, Management, Staff and team, are committed to icing a championship team each and every year and look forward to hosting this prestigious event in 2022.”
This is the sixth time the Championship has been held in Saskatchewan, and the second time in the southeast part of the province. The tournament brings together the top Junior A teams in the country, and the host Bruins, to compete for the national championship.
The hardest trophy to win in Canadian hockey? For the last 51 years, Junior A teams have faced off for the Centennial Cup, presented by Tim Hortons, but only after claiming league and regional titles first. Four regional representatives and a host team make up the field, and the 31 different championship teams have come from seven provinces.
The Road to the Centennial Cup includes 117 teams in nine leagues – from Canmore, Alta., to Flin Flon, Man., to Campbellton, N.B. Once the nine league champions have been decided, those teams meet for regional bragging rights, with champions of the Doyle Cup (Pacific – AJHL), Anavet Cup (West – SJHL, MJHL), Dudley Hewitt Cup (Central – SIJHL, NOJHL, OJHL) and Fred Page Cup (East – CCHL, LHJQ, MHL) joining the hosts to play for the national title.
The city of Estevan is happy to be the host of the 2022 Centennial Cup.
This year we will have a unique opportunity for have 10 teams face off for the title of Champion.
