When the Eagle Sky Estevan Bruins take to the ice Sunday afternoon, for the final leg of their three-game northern swing this weekend, they will do so with a new face between the pipes.

Goalie, Nathan Kam will make his first career SJHL start in Bruins’ black and gold, after being acquired from the Delta Ice Hawks of the PIJHL in exchange for a Player Development Fee (PDF) earlier in the week.

“My time here already has been very enjoyable,” Kam said with a smile, when asked how he’s settling in. “It’s already felt like I’ve been here for a few months, and the guys are helping me feel [at] home, so I’m just excited to get started.”

An 18-year-old netminder from Burnaby, BC., Kam is a prospect of the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets, who spent the majority of the last two seasons with the Yale Hockey Academy U18 Prep team, where he posted a 2.61 goals against average and .924 save percentage in 22 games last year.

Bruins’ Head Coach and GM, Drew Kocur said he’s looking forward to seeing the young goaltender in action for his debut this afternoon.

“We’re really excited to have Nathan as part of the group, and we’re looking forward to seeing him get his first taste of SJHL hockey here today,” Kocur said. “He had gotten sent down from Kelowna so we made a quick little transaction with Delta [to acquire him], and we’re excited to see Nathan get a chance this afternoon. We feel the guys have all the confidence in him and so do we as a staff.”

Sunday’s game will be a 3 p.m. start from La Ronge. The game will be available on FloHockey and for free on the Bruins YouTube Livestream. Marty will have your call with pregame at 2:45 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 3 p.m.

“It’s definitely a different environment with no mountains and everything, but I’m really enjoying my time here, and a lot less traffic [doesn’t hurt],” he added with a laugh.

“For me, I think it’s just playing big and quick. Just getting out to pucks, and a goalie I really looked up to is Thatcher Demko of the Canucks.”
