Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League

Bruins host defending champion, Mustangs at Affinity Place

The Eagle Sky Estevan Bruins return to play Friday night at Affinity Place, as the club welcomes the defending SJHL champion, Melfort Mustangs to town.

The Bruins (0-2-0) enter play looking to bounce back from an opening weekend series sweep at the hands of the Melville Millionaires, eager to notch their first win of the 2024-25 season with the potential to do so in front of the home crowd.

The Mustangs (2-0-0) enter play fresh off back-to-back wins over La Ronge (3-2 OT) and Flin Flon (6-2) opening weekend, led by back-to-back multi-point games by defenceman, Nicholas Andrusiak, who leads all SJHL blue liners with five points (two goals, three assists) in two games heading into Friday’s action.

A positive for the Bruins through their first two games has been the quick start of many of their first-year players.

Rorey Elson leads the team in scoring with goals in each of his first two games donning the ‘Spoked-B’, while rookie defenceman Luke Lawford also scored in his debut, and 20-year-old winger Odin George lit the lamp in his second game with the team.

Perhaps the X-Factor heading into Friday’s contest will be the special teams’ battle.

The Bruins will be looking to shore up a penalty kill that allowed three power play goals against in the first period in Melville last Saturday, in what was an otherwise close game at five-aside. Melfort enter play with the league’s third-best power play, having scored three on the man advantage through their opening two games.

Friday’s game from Affinity Place will be available on FloHockey and on the Bruins NEW YouTube livestream. The Room By Room Furniture Pregame Show will begin at 6:45 p.m. with puck drop to follow at 7 p.m.
