7-GAME WIN STREAK VAULTS BRUINS INTO DIVISION LEAD
The Power Dodge Estevan Bruins are once again on top of the Viterra Division after an overpowering performance against the Weyburn Red Wings on the first weekend of February.
The Bruins shutout the Red Wings in Weyburn 7-0 on Friday night, and followed that up with a 7-2 win at Affinity Place on Saturday night. The two wins combined with two weekend losses by the Yorkton Terriers puts Estevan four points ahead in the division with once month remaining in the regular season.
On Friday night, Michael McChesney and Jayden Davis (SHG) would give the Bruins an early 2-0 lead. Will Koop (PPG), Turner Ripplinger and Bryce Platt (SHG) increased the lead to 5-0 after two periods. Both Ripplinger and Jake Heerspink would also get into a pair of heavy fights in the middle frame.
McChesney’s second of the game and a late goal by Tristyn Deroose (PPG) would round out the scoring in a 7-0 victory. Kadin Kilpatrick (16/16) would earn his first career SJHL shutout, and also added an assist on McChesney’s goal in the 1st period.
The Bruins would debut their Carson Safety Services 3rd Jerseys on Saturday night, and would make it a winning debut for the slick new black uniforms.
Bryce Platt and Michael McChesney would put the Bruins up 2-0 early. Weyburn would snap Kilpatrick’s shutout streak at the 14:53 mark of the 1st period as Jordan Kazymyra made it 2-1. But Turner Ripplinger would restore the two-goal lead a few minutes later to make it 3-1 after the opening period.
The Bruins would break it open in the 2nd period with McChesney’s second of the game and goals by Jayden Davis (SHG) and Johnny Witzke (PPG) to make it 6-1. Weyburn’s Tyler Leibl (PPG) would make it 6-2 after two periods.
Eddie Gallagher would show off some sweet hands on a beautiful goal to make it 7-2 early in the 3rd period, and that would end up as the final score in back-to-back Bruins victories.
Kilpatrick (12/14) would earn his second win of the weekend and 6th of the season. Tyler Szturm, called up from Pilot Butte (Jr. B) for the weekend, came in at the end of the 3rd period and made saves on all 6 shots in his SJHL debut.
A total of 1,223 fans were at Affinity Place for Saturday night’s game, with the Certified Energy Services 50/50 jackpot totalling $9,875.
Estevan (25-20-2-1) will take their 7-game win streak into a massive road game against the Yorkton Terriers (24-22-1-0), the final meeting between the two teams of the season.
