The Eagle Sky Estevan Bruins were out and about Tuesday afternoon, serving soup and bannock lunch at Souris Valley Museum for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

This marked the fourth year the Bruins have been involved with the Museum and the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan’s Estevan Local 25, who organize the free lunch for the community.

President of MN-S Estevan Local 25 and board member with the Museum, Linda Sopp spoke to what it means to have the Bruins come out and volunteer once again this year.

“It’s been fantastic, this is our fourth year [serving the lunch] and they’ve been with us all four years, and it wouldn’t be the same without the guys,” she said looking around with a smile. “It has grown a lot, last year we had about 200-300 people and it’s been growing ever since we started… I think we’ve surpassed that now.”

Bruins’ captain, Rorey Elson also talked about the importance of giving back on an important day like today, even if it is a game day.

“Obviously today with it being National Truth and Reconciliation Day, I feel it’s important for us to be out in the community, especially with all the community has done for us,” Elson said. “A lot of people came out to get a good meal in, so it was great to see.”

The Bruins will return to action tonight (Tues) at Affinity Place to host the division rival Yorkton Terriers in the first meeting of the season series between the two teams. The game will be available on FloHockey, and for free on the Bruins YouTube Livestream. Pregame with Marty will begin at 6:45 p.m., with puck drop to follow at 7 p.m.
