Coming off a high-flying, competitive four days of Fall Camp Thursday-through-Sunday (Sept. 4-7), the stage is now set for the Bruins to take to the ice to open their preseason schedule against their Highway 39 Rivals in Weyburn.
The first of four games for the Bruins this preseason, tonight’s (Tuesday) game will kick off a home-and-home with the Wings, leading into the Bruins first home game of the exhibition schedule tomorrow night (Wed., Sept. 10) at Affinity Place.
Head Coach and G.M. of the Bruins, Drew Kocur said the team is ready to get things going following a fast-paced camp.
“We’re all very excited obviously, it’s day one of a new season, and it’s a chance to play Weyburn for our first preseason game of the year,” he said. “We’ve had some time together now as a group and looking forward to seeing what we can bring. Camp was great, the pace was up, and we’re going to play a hard in-your-face style of hockey this year, and we got to see that first-hand Sunday in the Black and Gold Game. For us tonight, we’re expecting the same thing and we’ll be looking to go at them right away.”

Jake Torget will get the start for the Bruins between the pipes, while fellow Top-40 Game standouts, Reid Bechard (2G, 1A) and Carter Hirsch (2G), will team up once again alongside power-forward Griffin Horne in a trio of young talent to watch.
“Reid Bechard really comes as advirtised; he plays that in-your-face hockey and Carter Hirsch, the local, obviously earned himself a game tonight against Weyburn and that line is sticking together from our Black and Gold Game. We’re looking forward to seeing how they play tonight,” Kocur said.
“We’re very excited to see all the new guys we committed to in the off-season play tonight and kind of see [where we’re at] not playing against your teammates or buddies, but going up against the other guys.”
Tuesday will also be the first (unofficial) look at Bruins’ star acquisition, Colton Getzlaff in a Bruins’ sweater for game action. Fresh off a strong showing at camp in his own right, Getzlaff announced right away he’s coming into the season on a mission, dropping the gloves in a spirited bout in Sunday’s Black and Gold showdown.
The Botineau, ND., product will line up on the left side of fellow Junior hockey veteran Noah Asmundson and high-profile rookie Gunner Moore, who finished sixth in scoring in the Sask. U18 AAA League last season, with an incredible 62 points (29G, 33A) in 44 games with the Estevan Bears.
While Tuesday’s game will mark the first of the exhibition schedule for the Bruins, it will be the third for the Red Wings. Weyburn is 1-1-0 to start the preseason, coming off a weekend split with the Melville Millionaires, with a pair of high-scoring 6-2 and 5-4 (SO) games.
Leading the Wings offensively is Ryder Rommelaere, who enters play fresh off a two-point performance (1G, 1A) in his preseason debut Saturday. Also among the notable players to watch on the Weyburn side is defenceman Simon Martin, who also scored in his preseason debut Saturday and is one of the fleetest-of-foot defenders in the league. Martin is among the returning blue liners bound for a breakout season this year in the SJHL.
Tuesday’s game from Crescent Point Place in Weyburn, will be available on the Bruins’ YouTube Livestream. Pregame will begin at 6:50 p.m. with puck drop to follow at 7 p.m. Marty Martinson will have your call on the action.
