Bruins’ Split Preseason Home-And-Home With Weyburn

The Power Dodge Estevan Bruins and Weyburn Red Wings got ready for the new year renewing the Highway 39 rivalry for two exhibition games on Friday and Saturday.

After two games, each team skated off with a win in their opponent’s home rink as the Bruins and Red Wings split the home-and-home.

The Bruins’ took Friday night’s fight-filled affair in Weyburn by a 2-1 score. The two teams combined for over 250 penalty minutes in their first exhibition meeting of the 2018/19 campaign.

Matthew Chekay scored an unassisted shorthanded goal and Mike McChesney added a powerplay marker in the win. Kade McMillen and Bronson Adams drew assists on McChesney’s eventual game-winner. Matt Lukacs (28/29) played the whole game for the Bruins in getting the win.

GAME SUMMARY

Weyburn would avenge Friday’s defeat with a 5-4 overtime win in Estevan in front of around 500 fans at Affinity Place on Saturday night. The Red Wings never trailed in the game with the Bruins’ tying the game twice in the 3rd period before Kole DeKoninck scored on the powerplay just :50 seconds into overtime.

Rookie forward Isaiah Thomas scored two goals for the Bruins, with fellow rookie Eddie Gallagher and veteran Mike McChesney each adding a goal. Defenceman Kade McMillen chipped in two assists, with Aigne McGeady-Bruce, George Cathers and Tanner Manz each adding a helper. Kadin Kilpatrick (18/23) played the whole game in goal for Estevan.

GAME SUMMARY

The Bruins’ have one more exhibition game on their schedule as they prepare to host the Minot Minotauros on Monday night at Affinity Place. Game time is 7:30.
