It’s always a special feeling to score your first goal with a new team, and for first-year Bruins, Rorey Elson and Luke Lawford, it didn’t take more than a game to light the lamp for their first donning the Bruins’ crest.

Elson’s tally served as the team’s first of the new season, coming late in the second period to make it a 2-1 game heading into the third. Pouncing on the rebound of an Owen Simmons’ shot from the point, Elson promptly put the puck just under the bar and into the net to make it a new game.

Immediately swarmed by his teammates as the Affinity Place crowd rose to their feet, Elson spoke to his feeling in the moment.

“I really hoped it got the boys going, because [as the] first goal of the season you better be getting hyped after that, and it put us back into a one-goal game, so you better be fired up after that,” he said, letting out a smile.

While the Bruins would ultimately fall 4-2 to Melville on the night, Elson said especially at this time of the year, the key is to refocus quickly.

“It’s a tough loss, but you’ve got to have a short memory, and especially in a home-and-home like this,” he said. “You’ve got to be ready to go [Saturday] so we’ve got to make sure to just bring the same intensity as we did today.”

Luke Lawford’s first as a Bruin also served as the first of his junior hockey career, after playing U18 Prep last season in Calgary. Coming off a shot from the left boards, Lawford’s marker started a Bruins’ push late, making it a 4-2 game to get the team back in it.

“We had talked about just getting pucks on net and keeping them low and that’s what I did and I ended up getting a bit of a lucky one,” he said as a grin crept across his face. “I’m happy about that and just trying to work on what we talked about in the room, getting pucks on goal and I got a good bounce there.”

Lawford said heading into Saturday night’s rematch, the team is looking forward to getting another crack at the Millionaires.

“We’ve just got a couple minor tweaks to make, but we were right there with them and just have to change a couple things,”  [We have to have a] short memory and get back at it for another chance at these guys.”

The Bruins will return to action Saturday night in Melville. Fans can catch all the action on FloHockey and on the NEW Official Bruins’ Stream on YouTube. Pregame on the stream will begin at 6:45 p.m., with puck drop to follow at 7 p.m.
