The Bruins’ 2025 Sportsman’s Dinner is coming up quick, on May 3!
This week, we’re releasing bios for this year’s three special guest speakers, with today’s on André Roy:
Fresh off a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) championship with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in 1994, Andre Roy was selected by the Boston Bruins in the sixth round of the ’94 NHL Entry Draft, 151st overall.
Suiting up for his first 13 games in the Bruins’ black and gold, Roy would break in full-time to the NHL ranks with the Ottawa Senators during the ‘99-00 season, racking up a monster 145 penalty minutes in 73 games.
Traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning midway through the 2001-02 season, Roy’s 211 penalty minutes that season marked a career-high, finishing top-10 in the NHL that season, ahead of fellow heavyweight staples such as Donald Brashear, Tie Domi and Georges Laraque.
Just two years later, Roy played 21 playoff games for the Lightning on the team’s run to their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Roy scored Tampa Bay’s opening goal of the playoffs that year, coming early in the second period of Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Quarter-finals series with the New York Islanders. The Lightning would go on to defeat the Calgary Flames in an epic seven-game Finals series on their way to the championship.
Following the 2005 lockout, Roy joined the Pittsburgh Penguins for the 2005-06 season, making his debut with the team the same season Sidney Crosby broke into the league and Mario Lemieux played the final 26 games of his career.
After a year and a half in Pittsburgh, Roy returned to Tampa Bay for two seasons from 2006-08, before suiting up for his final season during the 2008-09 season back in a Canadian hockey market with the Calgary Flames.
Roy finished his NHL career with 1,169 penalty minutes in 515 games, winning a Stanley Cup (‘04).
