A pair of Eagle Sky Estevan Bruins have been selected to represent the team, and the SJHL as a whole, at this year’s SJHL/MJHL Showcase coming up at the end of the month in Winnipeg.

Bruins’ standouts Kent Moors and Kieran Ronan are two of the 60 players across three SJHL rosters who will travel to Winnipeg’s Seven Oaks Sportsplex, Jan. 28-29, to compete against the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s best, as the joint-league Showcase enters its sixth year.

Two of the three teams for each league will feature top 20U talent, with the third “Young Guns” squad made up of the top 18U players. Each team will play two games over the two-day event.

Kent Moors

Moors, who leads the Bruins in scoring with 15 goals and 31 points this season, said he first received the news of his selection to the SJHL’s Team Gold early Thursday morning.

I got a text from [Bruins’] president Riley Tetreault this morning letting me know I made the team so that was pretty cool,” Moors said.

“It’s really cool to be able to represent my team and the league. There’s a lot of good players in this league, so it’s an honour to be selected for the team [and] it’ll be cool to be there with a teammate. Roans (Ronan) is a good player, really skilled and a good guy, so it’ll be fun.”

In addition to his Bruins’ teammate, Moors said he is also looking forward to getting a chance to catch up with a pair of former teammates from earlier in his hockey career in Weyburn Red Wings’ dynamo Ethan Dekay and Yorkton Terriers’ sniper Keenan Ingram.

“Ethan Dekay and Keenan Ingram are a couple of guys [I’m looking forward to seeing],” Moors said with a smile. “I played with them in Cowichan Valley and I actually played [on a line] with Dekay for a bit, so those are some good buddies of mine.”

Kieran Ronan

Ronan, who has 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) this season and has been a minute-muncher for the Bruins in all situations, and said he too is looking forward to the opportunity to compete at this year’s Showcase event.

“It definitely means a lot to me getting a chance to represent our guys and the Bruins’ organization along with the SJHL. I’m excited to go represent those that put me in this position and go play with some really good hockey players,” Ronan said.

“I’m excited to go experience this and play with Moorsy, obviously he’s very deserving and I enjoy playing with him. He’s a guy that can really make an impact in a game so I’m very confident in our ability to represent the Bruins well.”

Like Moors, Ronan said he too is looking forward to the opportunity to reunite with a former teammate on Team Gold, who is currently donning the winged-wheel in Weyburn.

“I’m really looking forward to playing with my buddy Jaxson Ruthven,” Ronan said. “He and I were in Aberdeen at the start of the year and we always enjoy playing against each other, so it’ll be nice to be on the same team again.”

Moors, Ronan and their Team Gold teammates will be coached by Weyburn Red Wings’ bench-boss, Cody Mapes (head coach), and the Melville Millionaires’ Doug Johnson (asst. coach).
