The Eagle Sky Estevan Bruins are coming off an impressive weekend sweep of the Warman Wolverines, to improve to 3-1-0 to open the New Year.
Friday nightÂ
The Bruins opened the weekend with an incredible nine-goal third period Friday, on their way to a 9-1 victory, led by a Lochlan Tetarenko hat-trick.
A 1-0 Warman lead through two periods on an Oliver Nottingham strike in the first, the Bruins would answer in the the third with a statement response.
First, Ewan Rennie scored his league-leading 24th of the year on a power play goal to knot the score 1-1. Then, less than four minutes later, Rennie would find Tetarenko for his first-of-three on a back-door one-timer at the side of the net.
From there, Tetarenko’s second of the night followed less than 30 seconds later, on another quick release at the side of the goal to make it 3-1, offering the Bruins an insurance marker.
Drew Beasley’s fourth of the year made it 4-1 just 6:26 into the third, deflecting a shot from Matthew Ronn; with Caleb Potter’s first of the season coming just three minutes later, converting on some nice puck movement on the power play to make it 5-1.
Then, at the 10:25 mark of the third, Tetarenko’s hat-trick goal came off a Cash Olson feed to break the game wide open at 6-1, making for a moment the product of Okotoks, AB., won’t soon forget.
“It means a bunch to me,” Tetarenko said. “I felt like maybe there was a monkey growing [on my back] but it was good to get it off early and I’m just happy about the win. I’m glad we got those nine goals in the third and that was a really fun 20 minutes. All four lines were going and I think that’s when we’re at our best in games, when we’ve got all four going and everyone involved.”
Rennie’s second of the night and 25th of the year made it 7-1, followed by Jaren Ashbee’s first as a Bruin and Chase Holt’s ninth of the year on a late-game breakaway.
Between the pipes, Dylan Adams stopped 16/17 to keep the team just a shot away through 40 minutes, until they could hit their scoring stride in the third.
On the night, the Bruins saw all four forward lines contribute at least a single goal en route to the victory, with two more coming from the defence.
Saturday night
In the rematch Saturday, the Bruins picked right up where they left off, on their way to a 7-2 win, led by tandem five-point games from Rennie (2G, 3A) and Cash Olson (1G, 4A).
Rennie’s 26th of the year opened the scoring just-passed the midway mark of the first, followed just two minutes later by Colton Getzlaff’s 10th, and first of two on the night on a hard wrister from the left boards.
Olson’s 11th then made it 3-0, coming off a one-timer set up by Rennie behind the net, to add an insurance marker prior to the first intermission.
In the second, after Warman’s Carter Bergen scored on the power play to get his team on the board at 3-1, Rennie again answered, this time on a slick feed by Olson, to curl the puck around the defender down low and find him at the side of the net.
A 4-1 game into the third, Harvey’s 10th of the season made it 5-1 just over 1:30 into the final frame, followed by Getzlaff’s second of the night and 11th of the season on a backhand in-tight.
Rylan Williams’ 17th of the year then capped the scoring for the Bruins on the night, converting on a beautiful 3-on-1 passing play with Rennie and Olson to match his previous career-high in goals set a season ago in 50 games (this season taking just 32).
Between the pipes, Nathan Kam stopped 32/34 for the win.
With eight points (four goals, four assists) on the weekend, Ewan Rennie was named SJHL Forward of the Week. Cash Olson took home SJHL Rookie of the Week honours with seven points (1G, 6A) over the two games.
With their success over the weekend, the Bruins are now 20-11-3 on the season through 34 games to sit second in the Bunge Division and fifth overall.
The Bruins will return to action Tuesday night in Yorkton when they face the division rival Terriers, who occupy sixth-place sitting just five points back with three games in-hand.
Tuesday’s game will be available on FloHockey and for free on the Bruins’ YouTube Livestream. Pregame on the Livestream will begin at 6:45 p.m. with puck drop to follow at 7 p.m.
