Mark Rumsey made an immediate impact on his new team as the 20-year-old forward from St. John’s, Newfoundland registered a point on all five goals over the Estevan Bruins’ first two preseason games against the Weyburn Red Wings.
On Saturday night in Yorkton, Rumsey took that impact to the next level.
Rumsey scored on his first shift just 45 seconds into the game, and followed that up with two more goals in the first 9:50 into the 1st period for a natural hat trick getting the Bruins’ out to an early 3-0 lead. Then after Jovan Malay made it 4-0, Rumsey fired home another goal before the end of the period for a 4-goal opening frame and the Bruins’ led 5-0 after 20 minutes.
Early in the 2nd period, Olivier Pouliot was taken down in front of the Yorkton goal on a scoring chance and as the play went the other way, Pouliot dropped the gloves with Yorkton defenceman Parker Jasper. After former Bruin Erik Boers beat Cam Hrdlicka to break the shutout bid, the Bruins’ added two more goals from Cody Davis and Ben Diamond to take a 7-1 lead after two periods.
Antoine St. Onge would add a late goal, with Rumsey getting the lone assist, as the Bruins’ skated off with an 8-1 victory in Yorkton. Hrdlicka earned the win with 21/22 saves in the game.
Rumsey (4G,1A) led the way, and now has 10 PTS (6G, 4A) in 3 GP in the preseason. St. Onge and Malay had 3 PTS (1G,2A), Dayton Deics and Alex Von Sprecken (2A) contributed from the back-end with Davis and Diamond (1G,1A) also getting a multi-point night.
The Bruins have one game remaining in preseason before beginning the regular season on September 24th with the home opener against Yorkton. The Bruins are in Weyburn on Sunday, Sept. 19th at 3:00pm, with the game being broadcast on Rock106 and on HockeyTV.
